PREMIERE: Kimmo Hakola: Two Imaginary Birds op. 114 for coloratura soprano and cello
Kimmo Hakola’s vocalises are a premiere and pay tribute to the precise observations of ornithologist Ivar Hortling, who worked in Siuntio and documented everything from bird migrations to the marking of bird songs. In the early 20th century, there were no recording devices available, yet Hortling was able to graphically describe and, in part, notate the variations in different pitch levels and the typical phrases of various bird species.
The program consists of music inspired by birds, from nightingales to sparrows and hens. The composers featured are beloved figures in the world of music, both domestic and international, and we will introduce just a few of them.
